Buena Vista Social Club
Ibrahim Ferer

In the rich tapestry of the original Buena Vista Social Club album, one name stands out - Ibrahim Ferrer. When Juan de Marcos was seeking a bolero singer to give life to "Dos Gardenias," he turned to Ferrer, whose star had already reached its zenith, unlike most of the group members. In fact, Ibrahim Ferrer was never hailed as a star, not even during the height of his career. Yet, his exceptional talent and captivating presence made him an indispensable part of the ensemble and a beloved figure for audiences worldwide.
His exceptional gift didn't go unnoticed by the executive producer, Nick Gold, who, alongside musical producer Ry Cooder, felt compelled to return to Havana to create a whole album dedicated to him. And so, at the age of 72, Ibrahim Ferrer embarked on a remarkable journey, recording his first solo album, aptly titled "Buena Vista Social Club presents Ibrahim Ferrer."
Much like its predecessor, the Buena Vista Social Club album, this record offers a compelling blend of traditional Cuban son, bolero, and danzón, featuring similar renowned musicians and the masterful touch of American guitarist Ry Cooder. The result is a collection of songs that transcends time, breathing life into the spirits of Cuba's musical heritage.
One of the album's standout tracks is the bolero "Silencio," a duet with the talented Omara Portuondo. Here, Ferrer's voice effortlessly intertwines with the melancholic melody, creating an aura of love and longing that is nothing short of spellbinding.
In "Marieta" and "Mami Me Gusto," Ferrer ventures beyond his comfort zone, embracing the spirited rhythms of Son, evoking the ambiance of an all-night neighborhood party. His versatility and willingness to explore new horizons add depth to the album.
The album comes to a close with two iconic tracks by the legendary Benny Moré - "Que Bueno Baila Usted" and "Como Fue." Ferrer's renditions of these classics are nothing short of magical, serving as a lasting testament to his mastery of Son Cubano.
Ibrahim Ferrer's solo endeavor, "Buena Vista Social Club presents Ibrahim Ferrer," is a tribute to his remarkable talent and an extension of the Buena Vista legacy. The album is a testament to the enduring allure of Cuban music, with Ferrer's voice acting as a timeless vessel that effortlessly carries us back to the heart of Cuba's musical past. It's a musical journey that transcends generations and borders, ensuring that Ibrahim Ferrer's legacy continues to shine brightly in the world of Cuban music.
